In view of this, there is a lot of work to do in coverting Azimuth angles to Right Sweeping Angle from the Backsight Line in order to effectively utilize the AD VA feature of FBK. To my opinion, employing the azimuth based traverse is a lot convenient for the survey crew simply because checking is a lot easier to perform. All I have to do is to prepare a a format and have it uploaded to the total station such that in every downloading, FBK is there. If this is the method adopted in the field, then I have no problem with FBK. Those coordinates can not be readily computed if all of your backsight lines are tuned to zero angle in order to effect a right sweeping angle from the backsigt line. On board a total station is the ability to calculate residual values based on calculated coordinates. This is what I mean of quick checking ability. I'm appending the heading from an FBK created from an RW5 so you can see what I'm talking about. As I said I worked with that for many year. I haven't quite grasped what you mean by 'quick checking ability' or that the zero backsight is 'not friendly in the field'.

Azimuths were easier to work with so that's what we used until we got software that gave angel right. We only used azimuth when we had a stakeout program that gave us the bearing or azimuth and distance to a point. I ran a crew for almost 20 years and can't remember running a traverse by azimuth. When you convert the RW5 to FBK what value do you get as the BS? We use 0 00 00 as the backsight but it specifies that angle in the backsight information.

In other words, your ZD VA, or AD VA or whatever has no dynamic link with the angle data you're donwloading from the instrument. To cut the story short, the angle data you downloaded from the instrument is the angle used in RW5 counterpart and no conversion is talking place along the process. If you tell me to use survey translate command instead, this method is only applicable for the entire survey database and not for a specific segment within a traverse. Unfortunately, there are many cases where you start from an assumed baseline and fixed later by GPS. This method is only good if you start your survey work from a well stablished baseline. In view of this, ZD VA is the most appropriate corresponding survey command in the FBK. Azimuth based traverse is the most common method adopted in the field simply because it provides quick checking ability on the part of the instrument man. All options you mentioned are based on backsight orientation which is normally azimuth based.
